Things To Bring On Safari.
Colors of Clothes - Clothes you wear while trying to locate animals should be dark greens, browns or black. Do Not wear bright colors like white, yellow, or red, in that the animals will see you from far and will hide or run. Although bright colors in camp are no problem.
.
Your Package at our safari camp includes laundry so 5 days worth of clothing is sufficient. We also provide towels, soap, shampoo in the camp.
· 1 Pair of lightweight canvas boots with good tred for walking on muddy trails (not smooth sole). The standard tropical military boot with canvas upper part and two holes on the side to allow water to go out are best. After the safari if you do not want to keep them, they make excellent tips to your favorite guides/bartender/tent servant, or you can trade them for african art.
· Sandals (like Tevas) for lounging around camp and allowing your feet to dry out after a day of searching for animals.
· Small Day Pack when hiking or traveling in vehicles or boats or Gorilla Treking, for binoculars, camera, guide book and water.(We truck in several hundred bottles of purified water which we give you as part of the package and the bottle acts as a canteen)
· 3 pairs of long trousers for hiking - we suggest strongly you buy 100% nylon (also called suplex fabric) because they dry immeaditely- many have the option of zipping off the legs and turning into shorts. Pants made of heavy Levi material are generally not a good idea on safari, because they take double the time to dry
· 2 pairs of shorts for around camp
· 2 light weight, long sleeve cotton shirts
· 3 light weight, short sleeve cotton shirts.
· 5-6 pair of boot socks (dark color)
· 5-6 pair of underwear (suggest loose fitting are best-tight fitting may cause rashes due to rubbing on humid skin surfaces)
· 2 scarves or small hand towels to wipe your face while walking - it will be humid! (dark colors)
· If you are going Gorilla Treking bring a warm jacket or sweater for the evenings, due to the high elevation.
· Money belt. (We have locking boxes in all the safari tents)
· Camera with zoom lense and extra film or large capacity chip/batteries (bring something to keep your camera dry-like a large heavy duty zip lock bag)
· Binoculars.
· Flashlight with extra batteries and bulbs
· Valid passport (carry a copy of this in another bag and leave a copy at your home in case of loss)
· Yellow-Fever International Certificate of Vaccination (although not required, but recommended)
· Malaria pills
· Large heavy duty zip locks - Put your tickets and passport in one to keep them dry.Put lotions and and other liquids in them in case they open in your suitcase
· Comfortable clothes and shoes for first and last day in Juba and traveling to and from home.
· Toiletries - toothbrush,comb,toothpaste, etc.
· Hair dryer: do not bring one over 1600 watts or you will blow the camp system. Southern Sudan and the camp are 220v. You can buy a hair dryer that will convert back and forth to 110 to 220
· Sun Block is recommended due to the equatorial sun
· Hat is also recommended (dark color-no white hats)
· Reading material
· Medicine: suggest small tubes of neosporin (antibiotic) and tenactin (fungacide). In the tropics small cuts left untreated often quickly can become infected. Moleskin if your feet are not used to a lot of walking. Antibiotic for mild stomach problems like amoxicilin (not if you are allergic to penicilan)or similiar products (talk to your doctor).
· Insect repellant-something with a high content of DEET. Your tent acts as a natural mosquito net, but with the opening and closing some bugs will get in and while on safari looking for animals the bugs will be looking for you.
· Extra pair of reading glasses
· Your Suitcases - We strongly recommend your suitcase be hard (reinforced fiber or metal) and not soft and that it lock. Theft in airports all over the world is common. Put a well attached baggage tag on the handle with your name and address, your phone and your email address on it. Also tape the same information to the inside of your suitcase
